Speaking at a public transport conference in Dubai,
Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Chairman Mattar Al
Tayer said the authority is to purchase just over 1,600 new buses,
bringing the total number of buses in service to 2,500 by 2009.
“It is the largest single deal for buses ever
made in the world and is part of the RTA's ambitious plan to develop
mass transit system with a view to increasing the number of people
using public transport to at least 30 per cent by 2009,” said Al
Tayer.
The buses are equipped with the latest technologies
such as voice announcement of the next stop, passengers counting
system, bus-positioning system linked with the RTA Control Center,
and internal and external display monitors.
"We are heading towards an integrated public
transport system once the Dubai Metro project starts operation in
September 2009. All modes of transport, including public buses,
marine transport, metro and taxis will be interlinked to ensure
smooth journey for passengers," Al Tayer said, adding that the RTA's
initiative would help reduce traffic in Dubai considerably.
'Mass transit in the emirate of Dubai is considered
a vital tool in the daily mobility of inhabitants. Abras plying
Dubai Creek lifted in 2006 around 26.7 million commuters, and the
public buses lifted around 88 million passengers,' said the Chairman
& Executive Director of the RTA.
