'Torta' Sandwich - Mexico City sets world record
MEXICO CITY, Mexico -- Dozens of people - including
owners from 45 small businesses, gathered in Mexico City to
help put a 161 feet (48-metre) 'Torta' sandwich together -
setting the new world record for the Largest
'Torta' Sandwich.
The World's
Largest 'Torta' Sandwich was prepared with basic ingredients
such as meat, chicken, beans, onions, lettuces, mayonnaise,
tomatoes and chili.
Organisers said the idea was to preserve Mexican
culinary traditions as people tend to eat more and more fast
foods.
"The idea is to promote our traditions,
and if there's something that we can be proud of, not only
here but worldwide, it's the torta," said Jose Luis Valenzuela,
Director of National Bakery Chamber. A torta is a Mexican
sandwich, served on an oblong 6-8 inch firm, crusty white
sandwich roll, called a bolillo, telera or birote. "Telera"
is soft, round bread; also commonly used is the Bolillo, a
torpedo-shaped French roll with a thick and crunchy crust.
The 'torta', as the Mexican sandwich
is known, was a joint effort of 45 restaurants and bakeries
from Mexico City.
Even though the effort was not recognised
by The Guinness Book of World Records, organisers said the
idea was to preserve Mexican culinary traditions as people
tend to eat more and more fast foods.
