sets world record
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla., USA -- Members of the Gulf
High School Interact Club promoted the Relay for
Life event at the school, benefiting the American Cancer
Society, by raising a 10-foot-tall “cupcake pyramid” containing
13,476 cupcakes , setting the world record for the Largest
Cupcake Tower.

"It's
an amazing show of support from the community," said David
Leathers, a member of the New Port Richey Relay for Life entertainment
committee.
"We were trying to think, 'what can we do
with birthdays?' " Interact member Thomas Anderson said.
Birthdays are a dominant theme in American
Cancer Society promotions and public relations efforts. The
organization refers to itself as "The official sponsor of
birthdays" and has a running "creating a world with more birthdays"
ad campaign.
The individual cupcakes would serve as a
nice bit of symbolism, representing individual cancer survivors
celebrating another birthday.
Shawn Foster, event chairman for the New
Port Richey Relay for Life, reported that overall attendance
for the fundraiser was up considerably this year.
A local company, Farrell Roofing,
offered to design and build the 14-level, tapering tower.
