World Record attempt for the simultaneous launch of 1,000 model rockets

AUSTIN -- Austin-area Cub Scout Pack 990 and Boy Scout Troop 990 today announced they will attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for the simultaneous launch of 1,000 model rockets.

The current record is held by the Boy Scout Mid-America Council in Omaha, Nebraska for the successful simultaneous launch of 399 rockets in September 2005. After reading about the world record attempt in Boy’s Life magazine, local Cub Scout Ethan Phillips and his father decided that Austin could break the record. The Scouts have raised $8,000 for the rocket and event materials. Each of the rockets will be individually built and hand-painted. The rockets will rise 500 to 1,000 feet in the air and must launch within 5 seconds of each other to meet the standard set by London’s Guinness World Record committee.

Congressman Michael McCaul and Austin City Council Member Lee Leffingwell will be speaking at the event. Entertainment will be provided by local band Jenny Wolfe and the Pack. Local and national media are invited to attend the launch early to film the set-up, special guests and launch. Interviews with Scouts, Scout leaders and community leaders can be scheduled in advance.

Date: Saturday, May 12th
Official Launch Time: 10:00 AM
Official Event Time: 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM
