Most electricity generated on bikes within 24 hours - Soreen sets world record
MANCHESTER, UK--A group of 500 cyclists gathered at Manchester Velodrome for an event organised by Soreen, the fruity malt loaf company; they generated around 72,414 watt hours using static bicyles
- setting the new world record for the most electricity generated by pedalling on bicycles for 24 hours.

The previous Guinness World record for the most electricity generated within 24 hours by pedalling static bicycles was 12953 watts, generated in Austria two years ago over a 24-hour period.
As well as trying to beat the record, the riders were raising money for The Christie, a specialist cancer hospital in Manchester, as Soreen had agreed to donate 5p per watt hour.
And they succeeded on both counts – generating around 72,414 watt hours to smash the previous record and raising over £3,500 in the process.
The event was kicked off by former Olympian, Iwan Thomas who set a high standard powering the totaliser.
Greater Manchester Police were also in attendance as well as a range of representatives from businesses around the city.
Cycling clubs from Manchester and the surrounding areas were also extremely well represented, battling it out to win a year's sponsorship deal from Soreen for producing the most watts as a team.
Invigilators from Guinness World Records were on hand to ensure there was fair play.
Cycling enthusiasts; David Clark, Carl Cleghorn, Stuart Kinsey and Darren Riley all completed the entire 24 hours and remained in good spirits even throughout the early hours of the morning, only pausing for toilet and stretching breaks!
