The record breaking class, which raised funds
for Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, was sponsored by Dairy
Farmers of Canada (DFC) and Chocolate Milk. The class
lasted for one hour and was led by fitness guru Kathy Smith,
who was appearing at the annual Can-Fit-Pro Conference and
Trade Show at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
"Dairy
Farmers of Canada is excited to have helped set a
new Guinness record for the world's largest indoor cycling
class," said Joanne Gallagher, Assistant Director, Nutrition,
Dairy Farmers of Canada. "It is important for our
nutrition team to get involved in events like the Can-Fit-Pro
as new research emerges on the benefits of drinking chocolate
milk as an effective post-workout beverage."
Recent studies suggest that drinking chocolate
milk following vigorous activity helps to speed up recovery
and recharge the body for its next workout. The research supports
a protein-carbohydrate combination beverage (such as chocolate
milk) as a more effective post-workout recovery beverage than
many popular sports beverages. In fact, those who consumed
a protein-carbohydrate beverage after a workout increased
their next workout performance by 21 per cent to 55 per cent
versus those who consumed a carbohydrate only beverage.
As muscle glycogen becomes depleted through exercise,
the capacity to perform at a high intensity is compromised.
The faster muscle glycogen stores are replenished following
exercise, the faster the recovery process and the greater
the return on performance.
"We believe that the scientific evidence supports
chocolate milk as an ideal beverage to replenish glycogen
and repair damaged muscle fibers," said Gallagher. "Drinking
chocolate milk 15 to 30 minutes after a workout to replace
glycogen can help your next workout be the best it can be."
