Longest stationary bike riding-George Hood sets
new world record
[May
15]NAPERVILLE, IL, USA--George Hood spent about 178 hours
over eight days riding a spinning bike at a suburban YMCA,
setting the new world record for the Longest stationary bike
riding.
He
rode the equivalent of 2,016 miles, burned more than 46,000
calories and never slept for more than 12 minutes at a time.
He took 57 breaks with a combined elapsed
time of 12 hours and 40 minutes. Of that time 9 hours and
36 minutes were used for sleep.
"My body took a beating," he told the Chicago
Tribune. "My quads are very sore, and I'm stiff. But it's
nothing a hot bath won't cure."
He trained for the ride at the X Sport Fitness
Center in Naperville.
Why'd he do it? In his words, "Because I could."
"If you don't witness something like this,
you couldn't imagine it could be done," said Marvin Paysen,
Hood's friend and training partner.
The retired Drug Enforcement Agency investigator
from Aurora began his ride on May 5 and finished early Monday,
May 12. Afterward, Hood, 50, was sent to
nearby Edward Hospital for evaluation, but he was released
after a couple of hours.
He
had held the record until last summer after spending
111 hours, 11 minutes and 11 seconds on a bike. That record
was broken by another cyclist from Tasmania.
The record may be the ultimate test of physical
and psychological endurance. But the divorced father of three
hopes it also inspires others to take on challenges that seem
out of their reach. In that way, the record is as much about
others as it is about him, Hood said.
Previous attempts raised more than $60,000
for various charities . Hood says even more than making it into the
book of world records, he attempted this feat as a fundraiser
for the Heritage YMCA's Strong Kids campaign and ended up
making around 30-thousand dollars for it.
