The Guinness World Records' record for the greatest distance canoed (or kayaked) on flat water in 24 hours is 241.95 km (150.34 miles) by Carter Johnson (USA) on Lake Merced, California, USA, on 29-30 April 2006.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Farthest distance by canoe / kayak on flat water in 24 hours (female); it is 195.33 km (121.37 mi) by Robyn Benincasa (USA) on Lake San Antonio, California, USA, on 29-30 October 2010.
Nelson traveled an unofficial and approximate distance of 151.3 miles, according to Western Washington University Department of Environmental Studies chairman Michael Medler, who was part of the team responsible for accurately measuring the distance, The Bellingham Herald reported.
"I would give anything if I could give a big cry," Nelson said in a phone interview from the hospital.
"But I don't think there's enough fluid in me to do it. It was a promise to my mom, my dad and my brother and my family and my wife. It was just an unfinished thing for a long, long time. I have a 1,000 memories I'm rushing through in a hurry."
Nelson said he was being kept in the hospital to investigate a heart abnormalities.
"Going that long and hard is hard on your kidneys," Nelson said. "It takes an internal tole, not just muscular, not just skin. ... I'm worked right now."
